You’re holding out? Me, too! From getting onto the ‘box-fresh’ white trainers treadmill that everyone is on?

By chance, I spotted the perfect alternative. At Joy & Mario’s, a Californian brand that has just opened its first store in Midvalley Megamall. A modern-day interpretation of the age-old espadrille, reinvented as classic, comfortable and oh-so-cool footwear.

While they retain the quintessential espadrille shape – that originated in the Pyrenees around the 14th century – the designs of these uppers look almost artisanal. Quirky and novel, in a variety of fabrics, textures and motifs, these espadrilles are transformed to meet today’s demands. In lace, animal print or sequins, these shoes will take you everywhere. From the beach to the dance floor, the office, or even next year’s Met Ball.

As for the sole, instead of the commonly used stiff jute, Joy & Mario’s use Phylon, a lightweight, flexible and shock-absorbent material. The brand is also committed to sustainability and environment-friendly initiatives, using natural material and fabrics and non-toxic glue. They manufacture at their own facility, too. They partner World Wildlife Fund, pledging a minimum USD75,000 to raise awareness for endangered animals and nature preservation. And collaborations with artists are ongoing.
